Amazon Prime is going heavy into music.
Yesterday, the company announced an expansion to its Prime benefit, offering a catalog of 100 million songs in shuffle mode that includes access to ad-free podcasts at no additional cost to the original membership.
The new and enhanced listening experience also includes a new ‘Podcast Previews’ feature, giving users soundbites to make it easier for users to find new shows that they love, and a list of exclusive shows and series, including Baby, this is Keke Palmer, MrBallen Podcast: Strange, Dark & Mysterious Stories, and Suspect: Vanished in the Snow, in addition to shows from top brands like CNN, NPR, The New York Times and ESPN.
The move is a direct hit at its two biggest music streaming competitors, Spotify and Apple Music, whose users are getting increasingly frustrated at having to listen to intrusive ads, sometimes even after paying for a premium subscription.
In his launch statement, Steve Boom, VP of Amazon Music explained: “When Amazon Music first launched for Prime members, we offered an ad-free catalog of 2 million songs, which was completely unique for music streaming at the time.”
He added: “We continue to innovate on behalf of our customers, and to bring even more entertainment to Prime members, on top of the convenience and value they already enjoy. We can’t wait for members to experience not only a massively expanded catalog of songs, but also the largest selection of ad-free top podcasts anywhere, at no additional cost to their membership.”
